A WWII unexploded bomb weighing 450 kg (about 1.5 meters long) was discovered at a construction site in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. Police indicated that this bomb could detonate at any moment, prompting a large-scale evacuation. According to Officer Chan, approximately 6,000 residents from 18 residential buildings had to evacuate on Friday night, and the bomb disposal operation was set to begin early Saturday morning. During the evacuation, two elderly individuals felt unwell and were sent to the hospital, but fortunately, there were no life-threatening issues. Such wartime bombs are not uncommon in Hong Kong; a similar bomb was found in Wan Chai in 2018, resulting in the temporary evacuation of 1,200 people and nearly 20 hours of bomb disposal work. During WWII, Hong Kong was a significant target on the Japanese military’s Asian front, and remnants of dangerous objects from those times still occasionally surface. This incident in Quarry Bay serves as a reminder that traces of history can be closer than we think, and safety must always come first.
